Spurn is one of our most iconic sites which never fails to amaze visitors as there’s so much on offer to appeal to the senses. With big, open blue skies to give a sense of space; sandy beaches to scour for shells, fossils and to scrunch your toes in!

We have a variety of mammals, insects, birds and many more species that call Spurn home, and we want to continue to provide the best habitat we can. To know what species are calling Spurn home we need to be surveying and gathering evidence of what is around. This is where you as a survey volunteer will help us to gather as much data as possible.

We are looking to expand our surveying team at Spurn as we have a variety of surveys we need to complete such as reptiles, moths, butterflies , beach nesting birds and plants (the list could go on!). If you have a specific interest in a species, you would like to survey we are excited to find out more.

We have a range of surveys we need to complete across spring, summer, and autumn. Each survey has a different methodology, and we can choose one with you to suit your interests.

No specific knowledge or experience is needed as we can provide training for all the surveys, but it's a bonus if you have any of the following:

  • Experience of ecological surveys
  • Botanical knowledge
  • Great Crested Newt license
  • Drivers licence – The site is only accessible via public transport on weekends and bank holidays

In return we can offer:

  • A chance to build your ecological skills.
  • A chance to contribute scientific data to a national nature reserve.
  • Development of ID skills
  • Be a valued member of friendly, professional team of staff and volunteers.
  • Access to a wide range of internal training offered by YWT
