Why do we need you:

You'll play a vital role in ensuring surveys are delivered consistently throughout the season, and build a stronger, more resilient monitoring team. Volunteer support directly enables more comprehensive spatial and seasonal coverage, stronger datasets, and more robust evidence to guide future restoration decisions. Your time and effort will play a vital role in expanding what the team can achieve and in building a clearer picture of the health of the Humber’s estuarine ecosystems.

What will you be doing?

In this role, you will be involved in hands-on intertidal fieldwork, helping staff deliver finfish surveys in the Humber Estuary. You will help carry out fish surveys using seine netting — a method where a long net is pulled through shallow water and brought back to shore to gently gather fish so they can be recorded and safely released. 

You will assist with setting up and retrieving nets, as well as helping to count, measure, and identify estuarine fish species caught in the nets — developing your fish ID skills and gaining confidence in species identification over time.

Full training and induction will be provided. 

Commitment 

Surveying days are dependent on tide times with a survey taking place roughly once every fortnight. 

Below is a list of dates with a back-up date incase of bad weather so we'd love to hear from you if you can make at least half of the dates below - you don't have to commit to all the dates. 

April - Wednesday 22^nd April and Thursday 23rd April

May - Thursday 7^th May, Friday 8th May, Thursday 21^st May and Friday 22nd May

June - Monday 8^th June, Tuesday 9th June, Monday 22^nd June and Tuesday 23rd June

July - Wednesday 1^st July,  Thursday 2nd July, Thursday 2nd July, Monday 6^th July 

August - Tuesday 4^th August, Wednesday 5th August, Wednesday 19^th August and Thursday 20th August

September - Thursday 17^th September and Friday 18th September

October - Thursday 1^st October, Friday 2nd October, Wednesday 15^th October and Thursday 16th October

An essential training session will be taking place on 7th and 8th April - you will only need to attend one of these training days. This training is required in order to undertake this volunteer role.
