At over 95 miles long, Yorkshire has an extensive stretch of coast, but life doesn’t just stop at the county borders. We’re connected to the rest of the world by oceanic currents that sweep past our shores, through the weather systems that roll in from all sides, with the mobile species that fly and swim incredible distances to visit our coastline. Within a single day on the Yorkshire coast, you could see dolphins playing amongst the waves, watch the UK’s largest seabird soar around the cliffs, and spot seals basking along the shore.

Wildlife on the Yorkshire coast is under pressure from our changing climate and human activities on a national, and international, scale.  Whilst major environmental changes are beyond the control of a single person, everyone can help to make sure that our coastline is cared for, and our wildlife is given the space it needs to thrive – and that’s where you come in!

Could you help us identify, record and monitor marine life? We are seeking volunteers from all walks of life, with a keen interest in conservation to help us discover what is living in and amongst the intertidal zones. These surveys will take place at low-tide and at various locations between Staithes and Scarborough, collecting valuable data to help identify key areas for future focus and contribute to conservation action in the region. 

Many hands make light work, and we need your keen eyes and dedication to detail to achieve our goal of recording as many species as we can. This is a dedicated 3-year volunteering opportunity through the River Esk Connect project, however we are hoping to extend this further in future. We will provide the training and the tools you need to get started. 

Living near the coastline, or visiting frequently, you likely know these beaches better than we do! We are keen to hear your stories of how these landscapes are changing, log your observations and use this information to help prioritise the work that is needed to safeguard our coastal species and habitats. 

An essential training session and full induction will be provided for this volunteer role.
