A green scene in an urban setting
This well-connected site is close to the Trans Peninne Trail and is linked to our neighbouring reserve at Carlton Marsh, so you can enjoy a visit as part of a day or half-day's walking in the area.
It's a quiet, green space in an urban setting, so perfect for a picnic or dog walk, and thee are great views of Barnsley along the way.
Spring is the best time to visit. Watch and listen for meadow pipits and skylarks, or perhaps a kestrel or buzzard flying over. Buttercups and other common flowers provide a bright splash of colour around the reserve, and on warm, sunny days, this is a great place to see butterflies and other insects.
For wildlife and people
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust manages Wharncliffe Woodmoor in partnership with the site's owners, Barnsley Council, for wildlife and local people. At the end of summer, a hay crop is taken from the grassland, and autumn brings with it the changing colours of the woodland. Boost your wildlife sightings for the day and visit adjoining Carlton Marsh or nearby reserves for more habitats and wildlife wonders.
