Carbon

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, through Yorkshire Peat Partnership, is restoring peatlands in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks and Nidderdale National Landscape.

Peatlands are the UK’s largest store of carbon, storing more carbon than the forests of the UK, France and Germany combined, but they can only do this in a natural wet state, and 80% of our peatlands are degraded.  Peatland restoration projects are therefore not only vital for locking up all this carbon, but can also provide additional benefits, such as enhancing biodiversity, mitigating flow of rainfall off the hills and reducing the impact of flooding downstream - protecting our homes and businesses - mitigating drought impacts, improving public health and benefiting local communities.

Peatland restoration also provides opportunities to engage with newly emerging natural capital markets, potentially providing opportunities for an alternative income while also supporting nature. The Peatland Carbon Code is a voluntary standard for UK peatland restoration projects, validating the marketing of your project’s climate benefits.. If you have a peatland restoration project in mind or would like to know more about the Peatland Carbon Code, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust can help!
