With a staggering 40,000 to choose from, picking Yorkshire’s most iconic species is no small feat. After some sleepless nights and plenty of heated debate, our wildlife experts have finally agreed on our ultimate top eight.
This assorted crew of creatures have been selected based on their charisma, their scarcity, and the fact that – for several of these species - Yorkshire serves as a critical stronghold for their survival.
- Puffin
- Bottlenose dolphin
- Tansy beetle
- Curlew
- Zebra spider
- Barn owl
- Round-leaved sundew

But which of these wonderfully wild critters will be crowned Yorkshire’s most loved species? To celebrate our 80th anniversary, we’re putting the power in your hands!
Every week from Saturday 20th June we’ll be pitting these species against each other in a public vote until only one remains.
The winner will be announced on Yorkshire Day which, as we’re sure you already know, is the Saturday 1st August.
