Discover the school and group workshops available at the Living Seas Events Centre!
At the Living Seas Events Centre, we offer a number of curriculum-linked sessions, which are detailed below. Each of these are half-day sessions and can be combined to create a full day visit to the coast. Also, most of our public events can be delivered as a private session for groups.
We have a dedicated classroom and events space for schools and groups, called the Discovery Room. There is a car park, picnic area, toilets, accessible toilets, and a neighbouring café that is open from April to October.
A half-day session at the LSEC (up to 3 hours) is £8+VAT per child, and a full day session at the LSEC (up to 6 hours) is £9+VAT per child, with a minimum booking required of 20 children.
For more information, or to book a school or group visit to the Living Seas Events Centre, please contact our Events and Experiences Officer, Sophie Atkinson (sophie.atkinson@ywt.org.uk).
Seashore Safari
Dive into life on the rocky shore with a marine biologist and discover the weird and wonderful sea creatures that live in Yorkshire’s rockpools. We’ll look for lobsters, hunt for hermit crabs and seek out starfish!
Explore the different habitats found on the Yorkshire coast, learn how to identify the organisms you find living on the rocky shore and discover the amazing ways in which they are adapted to their environment.
Suitable for EYFS, KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4.
The Sea and Me
Sadly, litter is now a common sight on our beaches. In the Discovery Room, we'll explore the different types of litter that we find washed up on Yorkshire's beaches and how it gets there, we'll get hands-on with different materials and discover how long they take to break down in the sea, and we'll discuss the effects that litter has on our marine wildlife. We’ll then head onto the shore for a guided beach clean and shoreline search.
Suitable for KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4.
Changing Coastlines
Discover how the sea has shaped Flamborough Head and how coastal erosion continues to change the headland. Explore how the chalk cliffs were formed, spot the features of the cliffs, and hunt for fossils! Dependent on the amount of time for the session, there is also the option to create your own coccolithophore out of air-drying clay.
Suitable for KS1 and KS2.

Seashore Sampling
Delve into the role of a marine scientist and discover the weird and wonderful marine life that lives in Yorkshire’s rockpools. Use quadrats and transect lines to survey the rocky shore, develop your identification skills, and explore how biodiversity changes along the rocky shore.
Suitable for KS3 and KS4.
All the children and staff had an amazing day. It was educational, fun and has built positive lasting memories which we hope all trips do. It was brilliant seeing our children get stuck in, wanting to find and handle crabs, as well as a range of other amazing creatures. Learning about how our coastlines are formed and erode was great and the visual demonstration with the sandcastles will stay with me forever. Thank you to Sophie and the team for such a memorable day!
