Wildlife Watch Awards

Are you a potential wildlife expert in the making? Would you like to learn more about nature and at the same time have lots of fun? If the answer is yes, read on...

Get involved in our Wildlife Watch Award scheme to earn an award as you complete great activities and challenges. There are many different things to do from exploring the outdoors to drawing and making your own funky crafts.

Hedgehog Award

Hedgehog Award - Wildlife WatchThis award is open for kids of all ages, and is a simple and fun way to earn some points whilst exploring nature in different ways.

First register for the award and collect your card. Next fill it with eight stamps, after completing different activities - these can be collected on our events or from our centres on proof of completing an activity e.g. a photo. Once your card is complete send it to the York office (see address below) and await your certificate and embroidered badge in return!

For events where you can collect stamps, look out for the 'Hedgehog Award' logo which appears on our events listing on the website and in the events leaflet included in Wildlife Yorkshire magazine. If you attend any of the events with this logo you can get a sticker for your award card! Stickers are given out by members of staff at our centres.

Kestrel Award

Kestrel Award logo - Wildlife WatchThe Kestrel Award card is for the over 8s and Trust members only. You do not need to have completed the Hedgehog Award to get involved with this.

This award has four exciting wildlife challenges, which you need to complete to receive a certificate and embroidered badge. The four categories are:

  • Create it!
  • Do it!
  • Record it!
  • Shout about it!

Participants will need to find an adult to assess their challenges - if you already attend a Wildlife Watch group or events, this could be done by the event leaders. Otherwise it could be a teacher, member of staff from a local Wildlife Trust (bring your work into a Trust centre) or someone from the community who is knowledgable on the topic. It doesn't need to be same person assessing each challenge. If necessary, parents may assess one of the challenges.

Once you have finished please send your completed card to the York office (see address below).

Nature Ranger Award

Nature Ranger Award logo - Wildlife WatchThe last of all challenges is the Nature Ranger Award which is more of a project-based activity and a chance to really showcase what you have learnt during your study!

Participants need to have completed the Kestrel Award first.

To take part you need to choose a UK wildlife or conservation topic to study, then produce a report for your local Wildlife Trust to assess.

Your study can be presented as one of the following:

  • Written report
  • Film
  • Powerpoint presentation
  • Website
  • By organising and leading a guided event for friends/school class/other group on the topic.

When complete please send to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and if successful you will receive a fantastic certificate signed by Chris Packham, an embroided badge, a mention in the Wildlife Watch magazine and a special mystery prize!
