Write to your local MP

Tuesday 14th February 2012

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust continues to be concerned about the direction that Defra's review of the Habitats Regulations is taking.

In the Autumn Statement Chanacellor George Osbourne announced a review of the European Habitats and Wild Birds Directive in England. The Directives provide crucial protection of some of England's most important and special local places.

There was a suggestion that these Directives stood in the way of economic development, that the protection they provided was merely "ridiculous gold plating".

The government is due to make a decision on 21st February, on this day they may choose to keep the laws that protect well loved places such as Flamborough Head and Yorkshire's limestone pavements. However there is every possibility that they may weaken these laws or even scrap them leaving important wildlife sites vulnerable.

If you love Yorkshire's wildlife and are shocked by the suggestion that many parts should no longer receive protection then write to your local MP and ask them to stand up for our local wildlife. Let them know about the places you love and why they are so important.

Destroying these places by weakening or removing the law will not serve anyone, economy or government. Once the damage is done it will be incredibly difficult to reverse.

Please help us to convince the government that this is not the right thing to do and write to your local MP today.
