Looking forward to a marine education by the sea

Tuesday 6th March 2012

Living Seas Centre to be built at South Landing, FlamboroughFlamborough

Building has begun on what will be transformed into Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s brand new base for marine education, The Living Seas Centre (LSC).

The building at South Landing, Flamborough is being rebuilt by its owners, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, after suffering a devastating fire in 2009. Once complete Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will take over the lease and transform the building into a hub of marine education and awareness.

Funding from LEADER and The Crown Estate has been secured to install brand new interpretation to champion the exciting wildlife found right here in the North Sea. Further LEADER funding will be used to kit out the centre to make it operational for both public and school use. This will include a large LED screen for presentations, the installation of a small office and a hot drinks machine.

Once open, the LSC will run a packed programme of exciting and engaging events that help raise awareness of the North Sea’s awe inspiring marine wildlife. Activities such as Seashore Safaris, Living Seas Safaris, beach art and theme days will run alongside our established beach cleaning and Shoresearch projects. YWT is also developing a programme of snorkelling events that allow people to experience the marine environment firsthand.

A primary school education programme, linked to the National Curriculum, will also be available to visiting schools. Sessions such as ‘Seashore Safari’, ‘Seashore Detective’, ‘Waves of Waste’ and ‘The Sea and Me’ will teach children not only about their local marine wildlife, but also why the sea is so important in all of our daily lives.

Volunteering opportunities will be available to help with the day to day running of the centre and to assist with our education and events programme. Details of these roles will be advertised as the build progresses but you can register your interested by emailing livingseas@ywt.org.uk.

Building is expected to take 4 months, with YWT needing an additional month to kit out the LSC.

Information about the Coast, Wolds, Wetlands & Waterways LEADER programme can be found at www.ruralprogrammeseastyorkshire.co.uk/rdpe. The LEADER programme is being financed by the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development and Defra as part of the Rural Development Programme for England.
