Show our feathered friends some love this Valentines Day. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will be running a fun, family friendly event this coming Tuesday as part of National Nest Box Week.

All are welcome to join the team from our new project, Dig In, on Tuesday 14th February from 10:30am – 12:00pm at Cornlands Road Playground in Westfield. At our first, free, hands-on event for the Westfield community we will be building nest boxes for birds, which you can either take home or put up in the community garden to encourage new wildlife. We will also be playing some birdie games and chatting about the design of the community garden in more detail.

Project Assistant Francesca Clair said:
“Now the milder winter has given way to a much chillier spell Yorkshire’s birds will be very grateful for any love spread their way. Nest boxes are not just used as summer residences, with many birds such as blue tits often using them as overnight shelters as the cold weather closes in.”

It is also important to remember to put plenty of water and food out at this time of year. With snow on the ground there are less natural food sources available so peanuts, mixed seeds and fatballs always go down a treat in your garden with your local population of birds. Also with temperatures reaching below freezing both in the day and at night, water will often form ice. Try bobbing a golf ball in your bird bath or a shallow dish to prevent the water from freezing so birds have access.

As a part of the brand new Dig In project, funded by The National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund, and delivered in partnership with City of York Council and Natural England, the team will be working with local communities in 6 wards across the city to transform 10 green spaces into community-led food growing spaces and deliver a programme of events to encourage wider participation.

If you would like to book a place on this event or find out more information do not hesitate to contact YWT on 01904 659570 or email us.
