KS1 Education Programme

All our activities can be individually tailored to meet the requirements of your group, and are linked to the National Curriculum.  Activities can also be adapted to be suitable for special needs groups of all ages.   A full day visit will usually involve 3 or 4 activities.  

 

Beneath the Water Pond dipping to capture, identify and study mini-beasts that live under water, before returning them to their natural environment.
Mini-Beast Madness Searching, sorting and studying mini-beasts found in leaf litter, log piles and grassland areas.
Home Sweet Home Acomparison of different habitats and the variety of mini beasts and plants found within them.
Tree-mendous An investigation into plants and trees and what they need to help them grow as well as a study of the variety of shapes and colours.
Close Your Eyes An exploration of senses including sound, touch and smell on the reserve including sound maps, sticky palettes, bat and moth games, camouflage activities, bark and leaf rubbings.
Three Little Pigs An investigation into materials found on the reserve linked to the three little pigs story.  A good opportunity to get muddy and explore the outdoor environment.
It’s Not Rubbish A citizenship workshop.  Take part in our waste free lunch competition and learn about how each of us can make less of an impact on our planet.
The Hungry caterpillar A hungry caterpillar themed literacy and life cycles workshop based on the popular storybook.
Nutty Numbers Explore the reserve on this numeracy workshop and sort and count animals, birds, petals and leaves.
Pretty as a Picture Nature inspired art including drawings, sculpture using natural materials, and an exploration of colour, shapes and textures.
Where am I? Discover how to find your way around the reserve using geography including a simple map game, and learn to draw simple maps with keys yourself.
Earth Education A series of activities aimed at helping children fully appreciate the wonders of nature including sticky palettes, journey sticks, un-natural trails.

Wonderful Wetlands Pond dipping to capture, identify and study aquatic organisms before returning them to their natural environment.  Used to study adaptations, classification, keys, life cycles, food chains.
Mini-beast Madness Searching and studying mini-beasts found in leaf litter and grassland areas.  Can be linked to habitats, interdependence, food chains or decomposition.
Habitat/Hike A comparison of different habitats and the adaptations of the invertebrates found within them. Can include ponds, meadow, woodland and soil as well as food chains and webs.
Flower Power An investigation into plants (or trees) including parts of a plant, and seed dispersal as well as life cycles and interdependence.
Brilliant Birds A bird workshop including bird watching in our hides and activities related to behaviour, migration and seasons.
Material Mayhem An investigation into materials found on the reserve.  Can include composting, decomposition and recycling.
What a Waste A citizenship themed activity involving taking part in our waste free lunch competition and learning about carbon footprints and our impact on local wildlife.
Word Wizards Literacy themed activities including creative writing, story telling/writing and using descriptive words.
Nature Numbers Can you use maths to work out how old a tree is, or estimate the number of insects on the reserve?  Collecting and handling data, estimation and measurement.
Super Sculpture An Andy Goldsworthy art workshop; nature inspired drawings and sculpture using natural materials.
Find Your Way Can you find your way around the reserve? Map work, scales and keys, compass work, trails and sketching.

KS3, KS4 and A Level Education Programme

All our activities can be individually tailored to meet the requirements of your group.

Fieldwork An introduction to data collection, fieldwork techniques and data handling in a variety of habitats.
Aquatic Invertebrates An introduction to aquatic invertebrates, their habitats and adaptations to life under water.  Nets are used to capture, identify and study aquatic life.
Terestrial Invertebrates A hands on basic introduction to terrestrial invertebrates.
Habitats A comparison of different habitats and the adaptations of the invertebrates found within them.  Can include ponds, meadow, woodland and soil.
Fieldwork Data collection, fieldwork techniques and data handling.
Themes eg migration/hibernation, bird watching.
Geography Site specific investigations, water cycle, map work
