Fisheries

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is developing its understanding of our local fisheries and identifying ways in which we can work with the fishing industry to promote the need for a healthy marine environment in order to support a healthy fishery long into the future.

Conservation goal

Working closely with Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authorities and local fishermen we hope to be able to identify ways in which conservation charities like us can work with the fishing industry to promote the need for a healthy marine environment in order to support a healthy fishery long into the future.

What we are doing

Our focus so far has concentrated on small scale fishermen undertaking fishing methods of low environmental impact, such as crab and lobster potting.

We have been working closely with a local Withernsea shellfish fisherman John White to understand more about the lengths John goes to locally to ensure there remains a thriving marine environment and fishery for the future. Watch our short film below to find out more (select HD).

How you can support the project

Our Living Seas officers hope to encourage more fishermen to opt for the conservation measures used by John that help to safeguard the marine habitats our shellfish rely on. Join us on our events and workshops to find out more about Yorkshire's shellfish and how you can make informed choices when purchasing shellfish to help support a healthy marine environment.

Find our about our work with GWS Seafood’s. A family run business specialising in processing locally caught, high quality, crab and lobster with limited environmental impact.
