Pearson Park Wildlife Garden (Hull)

In Hull’s city centre, there’s a special place it’s rather hidden but well worth a visit – the wildlife garden in Pearson Park. This fantastic gem doubles up as the Hull team Office (lucky team!)

If you haven’t visited the park’s wildlife garden, you’re in for a treat. Although the site is small, it’s perfectly formed with examples of lots of habitats, including ponds, hedgerows, woodland and a meadow, as well as a fruit and vegetable patch and a display garden. There is plenty of wildlife to see from blue tits, long-tailed tits and robins to butterflies, shield bugs, ladybirds, solitary bees – and much more.

Since taking over the lease, we have extended the existing veg patch the delicious veggies are a hit with the site’s regular visitors. A stunning feature of the site is the mature herb garden, which we inherited from the previous owners. In late spring and early summer, the divine scents of rosemary, oregano and sage waft across the whole garden. Few offices can boast such a beautiful and sweet-smelling entrance. There are two thriving bee hives on site and last year, the hive produced six litres of simply sublime tasting honey.

With help from our Future Jobs team, we have re-designed the existing pond. After re-profiling and re-lining, the team also built a boardwalk around the pond. It has been a huge hit with children who have come from all over the city to practise their pond dipping skills. The pond is home to plenty of frogs, a large population of smooth newts and a plethora of common (and a couple of more unusual) pond insects.

The team at Pearson Park is dedicated to continuing to improve the wildlife garden and has plenty of ideas for the future. We want visitors to really enjoy the site, and wildlife to thrive.

The wildlife garden is open seven days a week. You’ll find it on the edge of Pearson Park along Princes Avenue in the centre of Hull.  For a handy map go to our Nature Reserves page. And for a peek at some of the wonderful wildlife you can find here visit BugBlog.

Several projects are also run from Pearson Park, for details see web pages on Access to Nature, Urban and Rural Schools Twinning and Natural Play.
