Programme of Maintenance Work - April to June

The winter work programme will be drawing to an end within the first half of April. This will involve some last minute fires to burn off brash from tree/scrub clearance works undertaken at Loversall Pool, Loversall Bank and Decoy Lake.

In previous summers we have cut and cleared about a third of Loversall Field, but this was not done in 2017, so we will plan to do this in April before the spring growth gets going.

The seats and benches on the reserve are overdue a spruce up, so some of them will be sanded and re-treated with wood stain and the same goes for some of the hides that didn’t get done last year.

Patching up/repairs to paths will be done where needed and trimming back of vegetation from paths will be undertaken as and where encroaching growth occurs.

Litter is currently a real problem on the Overflow Car Park, so we will look to get on top of this over the coming weeks.

The weather has been very wet over the last 2-3 months, so please bear with us on lowering water levels for passage wading birds. As ever we will do as much as we can to allow levels to drop on West Scrape.

Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) work will be undertaken by Mark Roberts on two plots on the reserve. These areas will be subject to minimal disturbance for the purposes of the survey.

Mark Roberts (Assistant Reserves/Field Officer)

Engrailed - credit Janet HeppenstallOak beauty - credit Janet Heppenstall

Considering the cold, often wet weather we have been experiencing in recent weeks, a total of 19 moths of 9 different species was better than we expected. The list included 5 rather handsome Oak Beauty; 4 Yellow Horned; 2 each of March Moth, Common Quaker and Clouded Drab; and single examples of Acleris ferrugana, Engrailed, Small Quaker and Hebrew Character. All are common species, recorded regularly at Potteric Carr in late winter/early spring.
