Disruption....

Works to connect the iPort development to the electricity substation on Mallard Way (near Potteric Carr Visitor Centre) will start on the area of Potteric with footpaths on Monday 6th November, for several weeks. The footpaths will remain open, but the junction of the paths at the end of Loversall Bank/hawthorn tunnel by White Rose Way will have machinery and work going on which will be noisy and unsightly. So you may want to avoid this area. Ask in the visitor centre if you want advice on an alternative route. Later in the month machinery will be in the car park, but will not block the track round the car park.

More disruptive works will occur at night (after 5pm), so please avoid the Loversall Bank area completely after 5pm for the duration of the works.

Café News

Please note for the next few Mondays the café will be offering only a limited menu (hot and cold sandwiches, cakes and drinks)

Moth Trapping Report for Monday Night 20th November

The final moth trapping of 2017 delivered an unexpected new reserve record. A very worn November-type moth proved on dissection to be a Pale November Moth Epirrita christyi, the 20th new Potteric record for 2017. The external appearance of this species is very similar indeed to that of the much more frequent November Moth, so identification can only be confirmed through dissection. There are very few VC 63 records of Pale November Moth, so it's a notable record.

Also trapped on Monday night were December Moth (6), Scarce Umber (3), Chestnut (1), Large Wainscot (1), plus singles of Acleris sparsana and Epiphyas postvittana.

No reports for today but there was a late report of a Short-eared owl yesterday

Colour-ringed Avocet (seen at Potteric Carr on 1st May 2017). Details received from Mike Marsh.

Many thanks for your sightings of colour-ringed Avocet (Yellow over Blue left / Yellow over Red right) at Potteric Carr on 01/05/2017. Unfortunately we cannot say for certain where this bird was ringed because two Avocets have been fitted with the same colour-ring combination. Firstly we ringed one as a chick at Orfordness, Suffolk in 2014 and then in error an Avocet chick was fitted with the same colour-combination at Rutland Water in 2015.

A full list of the sightings we have received of this colour-ring combination are attached. In my mind there is little doubt that the bird you saw is the one from Rutland Water due to the fact that what was assumed to be “our” bird was present at Orfordness from March to June this year and was confirmed to be breeding.
