Moth Trapping Report for Monday Night, 21st August

With a warm night having been forecast, we were hoping to see a bumper harvest of moths on Tuesday morning. It didn’t quite work out that way; the number and variety of moths trapped was somewhat disappointing.

Nevertheless, there was a rather surprising new record. Ypsolopha dentella or Honeysuckle Moth as it is also known, is a fairly common species of woodlands and gardens throughout most of the UK. Honeysuckle bushes do occur on Potteric Carr but in very small quantity and, in all probability, the Ypsolopha dentella trapped here on Monday night will be a wanderer from nearby gardens. It is quite an attractive and unusual micro-moth with chestnut brown and lemon forewings and white thorax and antennae and the forewing has a very strongly down curved wing-tip giving the moth a very distinctive appearance.

Ypsolopha dentella is the 12th new reserve record discovered so far this year.

Other moths of interest included Beautiful Plume, Lesser Wax Moth, Twin-spotted Wainscot and Maiden’s Blush.

Early autumn species, including Rosy Rustic, Frosted Orange and the Sallow were also recorded.

Moth Trapping Report for Thursday Night, 17th August

Following a fairly mild but partly clear night, a total of 61 species of moths were trapped, a little below expectations for the time of year. There were no new records; these are usually associated with hot weather and, hence, warm nights.

A record of Ypsophila sequella was the first since 2011 and other species of note included Evergestis pallidata, Monopis weaverella, Peach Blossom, Angle-striped Sallow and Copper Underwing.
