Disruption to footpaths at Potteric Carr

Works to connect an electricity supply from the substation on Mallard way to the iPort development (south of the M18) will start by erecting a compound in the corner of the car park at Potteric Carr nature reserve from Monday 26th June. There may be disruption to footpaths (including closures, with alternative routes) from around Friday 30th June for around 3 weeks. The works will continue across the Loversall carr part of the reserve after this, but not affecting access for visitors. The reserve will still be open, but please ask on entry for advice on areas to avoid or if any footpaths are closed.

The works will be undertaken under the supervision of an ecologist and impacts on wildlife will be avoided where possible. This work is not being undertaken by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, but by a contractor on behalf of the iPort developers.

Moth Trapping Report for Sunday Night, 9th July 2017

The continuing warm weather resulted in another bumper haul of moths, 107 species in total. Astonishingly, there were 2 more new records. The last 3 trapping sessions have now produced 8 new Potteric Carr moth records!

The most exciting newcomer was a pristine LEAST CARPET, believed to be the first VC 63 (South & West Yorkshire) record. It is a species which has been expanding its range northwards in recent years, so is perhaps not entirely unexpected. The foodplants of its larvae include Ivy and Traveller’s Joy, of which there is plenty at Potteric Carr.

The other new find was a small Tortricid moth, Acleris holmiana. Although frequent in south-east and central Yorkshire, there are very few VC 63 records, so it is a significant record. The larvae feed on Rosaceous trees and shrubs, including Apple and Hawthorn.

Other noteworthy species trapped on Sunday night included Gelechia muscosellaAcleris logiana and Haworth’s Pug.
