Across South Yorkshire, our reserves team carries out vital practical conservation tasks, leading volunteer groups and carrying out office-based reserve management to enhance and protect nature. We are offering the opportunity for three voluntary trainees to gain vaulable experience within this team and develop skills in all aspects of habitat management.
Our reserves in South Yorkshire are incredible sites where you can see wildlife spectacles throughout the year. Potteric Carr is home to breeding bittern and marsh harriers as well as grass snakes, water voles and many different dragonflies in the summer. Over winter starling murmurations swoop over the visitor centre and deer are seen in the meadows and woodland. Our satelite sites are hidden gems for wildlife with owls, otters and many other species hunting, creeping and soaring through the landscape.
The role will be split between office-based tasks and practical habitat conservation work on various public nature reserves throughout South Yorkshire, with most time spent at our Potteric Carr nature reserve. Trainees will develop skills and gain experience carrying out habitat management activities such as scrub clearance, ragwort pulling, livestock management, fence and gate repairs and rubbish removal, amongst a variety of other jobs. Tasks often involve working with local volunteers to manage sites and part of the role will include leading volunteer groups in practical activities.
Office-based work will include researching, writing and developing management plans, preparing and supervising contract works, writing funding bids, fielding queries, as well as other reserves administration.
This role is for 12 months, for 3 days a week, comes with a competitive training budget and travel expenses and based at our Potteric Carr nature reserve in Doncaster.
Interviews will be held at Potteric Carr Nature Reserve on the 18th September.
